  • How may I get a hold of my child in the case of an emergency if no cell phones are allowed?

    To contact your child, please call program director Mark Maietta. During trips, he is always reachable via cell phone.
  • What are sleeping arrangements like on Missions trips?

    Sleeping bags are necessary on many trips. On every trip, boys and girls are separated.

    On the Native American Reservation trip, students and staff sleep in large circus-like tents; boys in one, girls in the other. Heaters and lights will be provided but travelers will need to bring their own cots which are available for rent.

    In Appalachia, Orange Lutheran stays at a converted elementary school. Boys and girls are separated into rooms that sleep 20-30 students.
     
    Accommodations vary on all other trips.
  • My child has special dietary, health or medication needs. Can these be accommodated?

    The special needs of students are accommodated as best as possible. For example, when doable, food options are provided for meals like gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. Nurses often travel on trips to aid students with all medical or health needs.
  • Is financial-aid available to help pay for trips?

    Students have the opportunity to recycle to raise funds for each trip and they can also write support letters to friends, family, and churches. We have a support raising packet with detailed instructions available in the Missions office or under the fundraising tab on the Missions Blackboard organization.
  • How many hours will my son/daughter get for service hours when they go on a trip?

    We generally give 10 service hours per day on each trip.   
  • How much spending money should students bring?

    On the Native American Reservation and Appalachia trips, students should not need more than $25 for any snacks or souvenirs. On our international trips, they might be want to bring $50-$100. However, students are never required to bring any more. The trip cost covers all expenses outside of souvenirs and the like.        
  • How do the trips and locations get chosen?

    Through much prayer and conversation, we, as the Missions staff, do our best to discern where and how God leads. There is no regular method of determining locations and ministries as it is never the same twice. Sometimes we have a particular place in mind, and we contact organizations in the area. Other times organizations or individuals come to us. While still other times, we have pre-existing contacts in a certain location or with a particular organization and we go from there. We spend many hours researching safety, accommodations, travel options, ministry options, and getting to know the organizations we partner with. But our most important job in all of our research is to have an open heart and a listening ear to God.     
  • Are parents allowed on trips? If so, what is the cost?

    Yes, parents are always welcomed and encouraged to join. The cost for parent chaperones is generally the same as the cost for students on international trips. However, on Native American Reservation trips and the Appalachia trip, chaperones are half-price.
  • What activities will my child be engaged in?

    Each trip is different, but regular ministry options include: construction, vacation Bible school programs for children, visiting the elderly in assisted living homes, volunteering in public elementary schools, landscaping, relational evangelism and clean-up projects.
  • Are there certain 'religious' qualifications and/or knowledge needed to be able to go on a Missions trip?

    No. Missions trips are open to all students as long as trip guidelines are followed, and respect is shown for both the team and those who are ministered to. It is not uncommon for students to come to faith on Missions trips.
  • How much school time will be missed on a given trip?

    The amount of school that students miss is minimized as much as possible. Generally, most students will miss two to three days.

    Each student is required to obtain a pre-planned absence form that records each assignment and test that is missed. Students, though, are encouraged to finish all school work prior to departing on a trip.
  • Are photos available of trip activities?

    Yes. Generally on each trip, a blog is updated featuring pictures and written reflections. The blog link is included on the trip paperwork.
  • Are students required to get medical shots for trips?

    A trip-specific list of shots that are required/recommended will be given to students at one of the first team meetings.
  • What should students pack for a trip?

    A trip-specific list will be given to students at one of the first team meetings.
  • How are students divided into ministry teams for each trip?

    The Missions staff spends much time in prayer reflecting on how student teams should be arranged. To promote a sense of community amongst the Missions program and school as a whole, and to avoid cliques, students are generally paired with other students they might not usually spend time with.
  • What if a student or several students become sick or injured?

    Aside from the Native American Reservation trip, the Missions program partners with on-site organizations to deal with medical issues that may arise (i.e. locating the nearest hospital or doctor, transporting team members, etc.).

    The Native American Reservation trip is located in Bishop, Calif. A local hospital is 10 minutes away.
  • What happens if connecting flights are canceled/delayed?

    We work with our travel agent to find the best solutions for travel delays and cancellations. Sometimes they are unavoidable, but we have not had any serious travel complications.
