OLu alum and former NFL wide receiver Austin Pettis will coach his position for the Lancers this upcoming season.
Austin Pettis '07 is one of three Lancers to make it to the NFL, but he's the first to come back and coach at his alma mater.
Pettis will coach wide receivers at OLu for the 2017-18 football season, alongside a host of alums at the helm of the OLu program, including head coach JP Presley '92 and offensive coordinator Mike Crawford '97.
“It’s a blessing and I feel very grateful to be able to come back to where it all started," Pettis said. "This is where I got my career started my freshman year. It’s nice to see where the program has progressed since I left and see that foundation that was in place before me continue on. I want to uphold that now as a coach.”
Pettis was an All-County standout at Orange Lutheran before playing at Boise State. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2011 and remained with the team through 2014, and then spent time with the San Diego Chargers.
“Succes is about having a championship mindset," Pettis said of what he hopes to bring to the OLu program. "We might not win a championship every year, but we need to have that in mind and let it reflect in the way that we work and carry ourselves. What I learned here is to be a champion on and off the field. This is about more than coaching football.
"I feel like the knowledge that I gained here, I can share it with these kids and help them become better men.”
