Honjiyo '13 spreading gospel through Cru

Through her work with Cru, Marissa Honjiyo is doing her part to spread God's love to those near and far.

God has invited each and every one of us to advance His kingdom by giving us a vocational call to extend the Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone in our communities. Through our life experiences, God is forming and shaping us to be ambassadors of hope in a broken world, transformed daily by His grace and love.

Marissa Honjiyo ‘13 has firsthand experience of God’s redemptive work in the world and she has decided to step into expanding His kingdom in a city she loves, Los Angeles, CA by interning with Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) at University of Southern California.

Before her time at Orange Lutheran, Marissa grew up in the church, attended Trinity Lutheran in Anaheim, and dedicated her time and energy to mastering the art of playing the violin at The Colburn Music Academy. Marissa attended OLu for her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Orange County School of the Arts. However, Marissa soon missed her Lancer family and transferred back to OLu after only one month.

After returning, she realized she had another calling: missions.

After graduating from OLu, Marissa went on to attend UC Santa Barbara, majoring in psychology and minoring in music. After seeing her passion for spreading the gospel, OLu’s Director of Student Life Drew Heim suggested she get involved with Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) while at UCSB. She quickly fell in love with the organization and began working with students at University of Southern California. Through working with USC students, Marissa saw parallels to her fellow OLu alumni, people who have great potential in life and she wanted to see them do all the amazing things they planned for themselves with Christ at the center.

After graduating from UCSB this past spring, Marissa was offered a year-long internship with Cru at USC. The position is a fully fundraised salary role, meaning that Marissa is looking for people to partner with her in ministry. Every staff member of Cru is responsible for raising their full salary to cover living expenses.

Marissa is spending the summer raising support. For the next 12 months, she needs $4,000 per month. She must raise the full salary before she can begin this journey. While working with Cru, she will also be working with Reality LA using her musical talents through leading worship.

Marissa is passionate about spreading the gospel message of Jesus Christ with college students and knows that Cru will be an amazing opportunity for her to do that. At her young age, Marissa is thrilled at the opportunity to be a missionary in a city that she loves dearly, Los Angeles. In the future, Marissa would like to open her own business and use that as an opportunity to share her faith and advance the kingdom of God.

Looking back at her time at OLu, she is happy she invested in the opportunities of being at a Christian school but wishes she had done it sooner. Her advice to current OLu students:  ‘Don’t think that the world revolves around you. Remember that you can be a child of God and have a powerful life and career at the same time.”

If you are interested in partnering with Marissa, you can give financially on a one-time or monthly basis (all giving is tax-deductible). In addition to financial partnership, consider praying that God’s kingdom is advanced in LA and beyond through Marissa’s willingness to surrender.
