The crew of the OLu spring musical has been preparing for months and will set sail this Saturday in their rendition of Cole Porter's Anything Goes.
By Matt Hutnyan
Cole Porter's Anything Goes follows a comically colorful assemblage of passengers who find themselves caught up in madcap antics aboard the ocean liner S.S. America, bound from New York to London.
The plot revolves around several charismatic figures, tip-toeing on the lines between love and trickery. Reno Sweeney, a popular nightclub singer and former evangelist, causes an uproar as she attempts to cleanse the passengers of their sins. Billy Crocker, a lovelorn stock broker, has stowed away to try to win the favor of Hope Harcourt, a heiress who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining this love triangle onboard the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin and his sidekick-in-crime, Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.
“This show will make people laugh like they never have before,” says senior Charlie Battaglia, who plays Moonface Martin. “Between the one-liners, the dry humor and the quick wit of the quirky characters, the audience won’t be able to control themselves."
OLu’s rendition takes the show to a new level of over-the-top grandeur. The massive set is matched only by the massive cast that fills the stage for big song and dance numbers, such as “Anything Goes” and “Blow Gabriel Blow." These performances, according to Director Chelsey Everhart, make this show one that “can’t be missed.”
Anything Goes opens Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m., and will show on Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m., Friday, March 31 at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday April 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available HERE.
