Athlete Profile: Delaney Demsher, Girls Water Polo

Jenelyn Cunningham Russo '88
For as long as she can remember, Delaney Demsher has always been more comfortable in the water. After spending six years as a competitive swimmer, she found herself on the other side of the pool deck where her love for water polo was instantaneous.
“I’ve always loved the water because I’m not much of a land person,” says Demsher. “Once I started water polo, I changed immediately from swim. It’s so much more fun. From a team aspect, the girls are family. I love winning with them as a team.”
The Orange Lutheran junior is in her second year as a varsity player and is primarily in the set or 2M position for the Lancers. Now an upperclassman, Demsher sees her role expanding into guiding her younger teammates.
“Delaney is a great Christian young woman who puts her team and school first before any individual accolades,” says OLu girls water polo head coach, Steve Carrera. “That has allowed her to thrive and improve. She is so committed to the program, and she believes so strongly in what we are doing, that it makes it easy to coach her.”
Demsher’s commitment to the team and their goals of winning Trinity League and CIF championships means staying mentally tough and keeping a selfless mindset.
“One of the biggest challenges is…having to put other things aside and focus on the team,” says the 17-year old. “It’s hard to do, but in the end, if CIF is our goal, we have to do that. You have to put in the work, and then you’ll get good results.”
Away from the pool, Demsher serves her campus community as a member of OLu’s Student Ambassador Team, where she enjoys representing the school’s mission and purpose.
The Tustin resident sees herself attending college on the East Coast, and she hopes to continue her water polo career alongside studying English or psychology. Demsher’s faith and her family, specifically her older brother Connor, serve as her unwavering support system.
“A lot of times in the sport, you can lose sight of why you’re doing this,” says Demsher. “Our coaches remind us that we’re doing this to glorify God. It’s always in the back of my head that I’m not doing this just for myself, I’m doing this for something bigger, and God is guiding us.”
