Athlete Profile: Graeme Trevett, Boys Soccer

Jenelyn Cunningham Russo '88
It could be said that soccer is an integral part of the Southern California youth sports landscape. But for Orange Lutheran junior Graeme Trevett, his passion for the game is rooted in his heritage.

“My dad got me into soccer because he was born and raised in England,” says Trevett, “so he’s obsessed with it.”

After getting his start at age three and playing with a local league for a few years, Trevett decided to step away from the sport. He shifted his focus to skateboarding, but when he was 11 years old, he made his way back to the pitch.

“And I’ve been loving it ever since,” says Trevett. “I love the culture, the development and getting better every day.”

Trevett is a left back for the Lancers, a position that allows the three-year varsity player to be involved in both defensive plays as well as the attack. This season, he is looking to take on more of a leadership role where he can mentor and inspire his younger teammates.

“Graeme is a gritty player,” says OLu head boys soccer coach, Steve Tatone. “He plays with heart and character, and he loves the sport of soccer.”

Two years ago, Trevett found himself in the midst of some mental struggles with his game. Unable to find the right mindset, anger set in and his performance on the field began to suffer. He spent time working with a trainer, which helped to calm his mind. As a result, his play began to improve.

“I started liking the game more,” says the 17-year old. “I got less frustrated, and I began playing how I love to play. I’ve learned that hard work conquers talent. Always strive to be the best and realize that there’s always room for improvement. You can always do better.”

Trevett also enjoys snowboarding and playing footvolley, a sport that combines soccer with beach volleyball. The Westminster resident hopes to continue his playing career after high school, and he has a strong interest in science. Grateful for his parents who continually push him to do his best, Trevett knows that win or lose, God has a plan for each of our lives.

“He will always lead us down the right path,” says Trevett. “Through tough times and defeat, God will prevail.”
