Orange Lutheran’s Freshman Retreat focuses on Acceptance, Leadership, and Love in Christ

This past August, Orange Lutheran launched its first-ever All In Retreat, a milestone experience designed to welcome the Class of 2029 into the Lancer family. Attended by 352 freshmen and hosted at Forest Home, the retreat provided an immersive orientation built on faith, fellowship, and fun—laying a Christ-centered foundation for the journey ahead.

Orange Lutheran is grateful for the support of the Pacific Southwest District (PSD), whose mission grant helped make the All In Retreat a reality.

Building Connection and Community

Intentional sessions throughout the retreat guided students to connect deeply, reflect on purpose, and form meaningful relationships. Counseling’s Step to the Line activity asked them to embrace what makes them unique in the community. In theology, they explored the Image of God, grounding their identity in God’s love. Student Life introduced leadership pathways and involvement, while Missions led games that fostered laughter, trust, and shared stories.

On the first evening, students gathered for AMP’d Up worship, where music and praise filled the space. Many rushed the stage to sing alongside their peers, and the energy carried into color competitions filled with cheers and laughter.

The retreat concluded with the Sand Ceremony, where the themes of Lancers, Lord, and Love reminded freshmen that they stand together as one community, bound by the love of Christ. Each student poured sand into a large “L,” symbolizing that while they are uniquely made, they are united together in Him.

Equipping Students for the Journey

Every freshman received an OLu-branded duffle bag, class and theme-verse shirts, and color-coded gear, together with a 36-page journal filled with maps, reflection prompts, counselor contacts, memory verses, and mission trip information. One student shared, “The retreat made me feel like OLu is a place where I will be cared for and can grow in my understanding of God’s love because all the activities pointed me back to Him.”

Impact Beyond the Retreat

The influence of the retreat has already extended far beyond its two days away. Students returned with a stronger sense of belonging, ready to step into classrooms and co-curricular opportunities with confidence. Teachers noticed an immediate difference: “Our freshmen came back more engaged and ready to learn. They have a common experience to build on, and you can see the confidence it gives them as they step into high school life.”

Parents echoed this impact: “My son shared everything he did—from the ride up to the ride home—including the people he met. What an amazing experience.” Another parent added, “This retreat shows how committed OLu is to investing in their students and making sure they feel like they belong from day one.”

Survey results confirmed these reflections:

·       98% of students said they felt they belonged at OLu after the retreat

·       88% said they felt confident stepping into high school

·       97% of parents would recommend the retreat to future freshman families

A Foundation for the Future

The All In Retreat accomplished what it set out to do: build connections, root students in mission, and set the tone for a Christian community of Acceptance, Leadership, and Love in Christ. As Romans 15:7 reminds us, “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

With the vision and support of the Pacific Southwest District, this inaugural retreat now stands not just as orientation but as the first step in a journey of discipleship, belonging, and spiritual growth, reminding every student that at Orange Lutheran, they are not only All In but also All His.
