Kent Hannibal, Director

Mr. Hannibal

Kent Hannibal is Director of Bands and Department Chair for the Performing Arts at Lutheran High School of Orange County where he directs the Lancer Marching Band and Color Guard, Wind Ensemble, Jazz I and II, as well as the Handbell Ensemble.  In addition to his duties at Orange Lutheran, he is an active freelance musician in Southern California.  He has been a longtime member of the percussion section of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and has also performed with the Pacific Symphony, the Pasadena Symphony, and the California Philharmonic, as well as the Mozart Classical Orchestra.

His teaching career has included appointments as an adjunct faculty member at Chapman University, California State University Long Beach, California Baptist University and Vanguard University.  Prior to his tenure at Orange Lutheran, he was on the faculty at Northwood High School in Irvine.

Kent currently resides in Irvine with his wife Roberta.  His daughter Claire is a student at the University of Mississippi, “Ole Miss,” where she performs in the school’s Color Guard and Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Marching Band

Lutheran High School established the Marching Band and Color Guard program in earnest with the addition of Kent Hannibal as Director in the fall of 2005.  The program has excelled in every conceivable dimension well beyond everyone’s expectation: fielding a complete complement performance unit including a Front Ensemble “Pit”, Wind, Drum Line, and Color Guard sections, putting on a comprehensive half-time show at Football games, obtaining top ranking awards in Field Show Competitions including the recent participation in the Hawaii 2009 Invitational Competition.

Supporting Mr. Hannibal is a talented staff for each of the major components:  Daphne Wagner for Woodwinds, Clint Matsen for Brass, Glen Crosby for Drum Line, Melody Zellinger for Color Guard, Blaire Lezcano for Marching, and Jonathon Zuniga for the Pit.  In the background of the entire program is a very dedicated and capable group of  parents – one that has grown into a strong community committed to supporting all of the program’s efforts.

During the Winter and Spring months of the year, the program transitions to indoor performances whereby the Band and Guard become the Wind Ensemble, Jazz I and Jazz II Ensembles, and Winter Guard, respectively, with the addition of the Handbells Ensemble.  The Jazz I Ensemble has won numerous awards at regional Jazz Competitions as well as being invited to perform at the well known Steamer’s Jazz Club in Fullerton.   See video clip below:
